Combiners fear for frenzel’s nerves

Especially with eric frenzel. With his head down, the dethroned individual world champion stomped past the journalists on friday. Not a word, pure deception. Instead of the medal he had hoped for, the athlete from oberwiesenthal had missed a place on the podium by two tenths of a second in fourth place in the individual competition.
Coach and colleagues initially said that it was not so bad. "I don’t think we have to do much reconstruction work on eric. He puts something like this away," claimed weinbuch. Bjorn kircheisen, who had snatched bronze from under frenzel’s nose, also saw no reason to panic. "There is no need to worry about him. The female that he still gets his medal on the grobschanze," said the johanngeorgenstadter.
But the 2011 world champion did not shrug off the jolt quite so easily. Frenzel holed up in his room in the team’s quarters. Not even good friends reached the saxon, whose rough expectations were not fulfilled in a gripping finish.
And not only frenzel needed encouragement. Tino edelmann and johannes rydzek were victims of the shortened start and the changing wind conditions and had no chance in the cross-country skiing. As motivation for the team decision, in which after 26 years now finally once again the gold medal is to be brought to germany, the results beyond the 20. Place does not serve.
Rydzek’s weak performance with rank 30 even cost him his place in the team, which he had to cede to fabian rieble. The 22 year old from breitnau, the 24. On saturday, weinbuch gave him the edge over oberstdorf.
"It has to be our ambition to finally get it done," said the national coach, who was on the world champion team at the 1987 world championships at home in oberstdorf and also triumphed at the olympics the following year. But after the not really successful individual competition, the anxiety starts again; and the fear that it could again "only" become silver is gross.
Especially since the austrian mario stecher, who had snatched the gold from the germans in the two team competitions in oslo two years ago in the final sprint, once again proved his qualities against kircheisen and frenzel. "He’s just a rip-roaring dog who knows exactly how to behave. But we still have something up our sleeves," said weinbuch, who again expects a very close contest. "Austria, japan, france, maybe norway too, are serious opponents. In any case, the title is not given to us."
